The Bear Report Book Review

I found the most spectacular book today. You know how much I love writing and this book is perfect to teach students about how to generate ideas for writing!  Not only that, it is about a polar bear.  It's just perfect for this time of year!

I know it's not just me getting excited about new books - am I right? This newly released book is called The Bear Report.  It's by Thyra Heder.

The Bear Report is about a little girl named Sophie who gets a homework assignment about facts about Polar Bears.

She is not happy. She is bored. She is a reluctant participant in this assignment. So, she does what many of our students do: she completes the assignment with bare minimum effort and no passion using information she THOUGHT she knew about Polar Bears. (One more reason when you do your know, wonder, learn to put: what you think you know.)  How many times have you seen that??? A million!

Here is where a polar bear suddenly arrives in her living room. ( From visualizing? Reading a book? Watching a Science show on tv?)

Through amazing artwork, readers are taken on an Arctic journey where Sophie thinks there is nothing in the Arctic but soon discovers there's so much more than she thought.

Sophie even learns of a few dangers.

Sophie learns a lot of first hand experiences.

Soon it's time to go home.

Even though her homework assignment was limited to 3 ideas/facts, Sophie's new found excitement for learning turns into a passion project! Isn't that the way all learning should be???

I just love this book in every way. It has a great story, fabulous illustrations and is perfect for your writing lessons and/or Arctic studies.
