Summer Reading and Learning

Summer will soon be here and what better time to think about some of the books that you might like to read to your class or have as your own little supply of fun books for the car when you go on your own road trip!

I'm always surprised that kids or parents tell me they didn't read too much over the summer because they were vacationing and they didn't "have time".  This makes reading and learning over summer sound like such a chore!  When my two daughters were little I was so thankful for great books that they could read as we travelled.  I loved listening to them in the car asking each other questions about the books.  We always packed tons of books when we camped too. There was nothing better than reading books with a flashlight while gazing at the stars.

I've compiled a small list of books that you might like to check out for your summer reading collections.

I know I've hear this ALOT!  Are We There Yet?  is a new book this year from Dan Santat.  He's a Caldecott Medalist!  I love how this book shows a very bored little boy and he feels that the road trip is so slow, time is going backwards.  Maybe it is? Soon we find him in the times of dinosaurs, pirates, Ancient Egypt - FUN!! There's lots to look at in this book.
So many 2nd and 3rd graders are hooked on the Magic Tree House books by Mary Pop Osborne.  It's not hard to see why.  I just love the weaving of true facts throughout the stories which keep kids entertained for a long time. I know my daughter begged me for the boxed set! In this book Jack and Annie find themselves and the tree house on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean.  Their rescuers are scientists and explorers but they are also looking for a sea monster!

Who doesn't love the mischievous Curious George by Margret and H.A. Rey?  Kids love it because they are so curious themselves.  In this book "Curious George Goes Camping, George tries to be helpful. But, as always, he ends up causing quite a stir. He also meets a forest creature.  What could happen now?
Scaredy Squirrel is one of my favorite series to read to kids.  I just love how quirky he is and he resembles many kids' personalities  so they can surely relate.  Melanie Watt has a great sense of humor and Scaredy Squirrel Goes Camping is no exception. As usual Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of things like mosquitos and skunks so he doesn't want to go camping but he is forced to go into the woods to find an outlet to plug in his tv and the fun ensues!

Maps, games, color photos of a road trip across the U.S.  This book will definitely keep kids occupied on that road trip. I just love fact books by National Geographic and this Atlas is no exception.

Of course writing about your summer can be a really fun thing to do too!  I created this mini summer pack to give kids something to do whether they are at home or traveling.  It includes ideas on sun safety, the beach, story writing and a summer journal.  Best of all, it's FREE!  You can grab it by clicking on the picture.
